New year, new job: According to online job site Glassdoor, the number of people who apply for jobs on the site spikes by 22% in January.
So where are the good jobs? As part of its Employees’ Choice Awards for the Best Places to Work in 2020, the company also identified where in the U.S. these “best” companies are currently hiring.
Coastal cities like San Jose, Seattle, San Francisco, Boston, and New York rule the roost, taking the top 5 spots. However, as the list grows, so do opportunities in non-coastal markets. Atlanta follows NYC as a strong 6th, with 2,385 total job openings among the best places to work. Chicago and Austin follow, in 7th and 8th place, respectively.
"There’s a concentration of open jobs at the ‘Best Places to Work’ employers in hubs like San Francisco and New York City, but we also see jobs for these exceptional employers across the country including areas like Phoenix and Atlanta. Many of these employers are hiring outside of their headquarter locations to find new and diverse talent as they grow and scale,” Amanda Stansell, a senior research analyst at Glassdoor, told Yahoo Finance.
“We see very diverse metro areas with open jobs, many of which have a great pool of talent from local universities. There are certainly plenty of opportunities for people to find a job ... beyond the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City," she said.
Glassdoor reminds Yahoo Finance that culture continues to play a big role when it comes to work environment.
Andrew Chamberlain, Glassdoor’s chief economist, notes that 2020 will begin a culture-first decade for employers. “Even a decade ago, employee culture was viewed by CEOs as fluffy, hard to measure, and a nice-to-have. But three fundamental trends have elevated the importance of employee sentiment throughout the economy in recent years.” Online workplace transparency, a shift toward knowledge-based work, and looking for positions within companies that have real-world business impact.
To make the list of “Best Places to Work,” a company must have at least 75 ratings across eight workplace attributes, such as career opportunities, compensation, benefits, culture, values, and work-life balance. The company must also be U.S.-based and employee at least 1,000 people.
